NORTH and SOUTH both prosper
A
great week of golf
resulted in Steve Wells and Justin Manester (Teignmouth
G.C.) taking the Mens title and Louise Richardson
and Joan Peacock (Durham City G.C.) taking the
Ladies title. Both pairs came from behind to win on
the last and final day.
What a week of golf, gambling and fun!!. After
arriving in Las Vegas and checking into the Luxor
hotel on Saturday, we strolled "The Strip", climbing
the Eifel Tower in Paris, riding gondolas in The
Venetian, watching the musical
fountains of the Belaggio before starting the
competition on Monday.
We played Better Ball Stableford off 3/4 handicap on
all of the 3 Pete Dye designed championship courses
at LV Pauite which is on an Indian reservation in
the heart of the Southern Nevada desert. Day one was
the turn of
Snow Mountain.
Strong winds with brilliant sunshine contributed to
a tough day and along with the stimp meter of about
12 on the greens, the scores reflected this. Des &
Tom took the lead for the Men and Helen & Karen led the Ladies.
Day Two was the turn of
Sun Mountain.
An easier day with hardly an wind and the
scores certainly reflected this change. The lead changed hands with
Mike & Micheal now
leading the men and Louise & Joan the ladies.
Day Three was the turn of the
monstrous
Wolf.
With its signature hole of an island green and the stimp meter now about 14, this was really going to
be a tough test of golf. The Durham City
ladies just hung on to their lead but it was a close
contest. The boys from Teignmouth played brilliantly
to come from second
to take the title by a clear 4 points.
The shows of Mama Mia, Celine Dione and the RatPack
tribute were just first class. Marilyn Munroe picked
on Des Bingham to sing to which made his day.We as a company, WTG, were
profoundly proud of every competitor, not only did
they represent their respective clubs with honour,
they produced an amazing ability to socialize to
extremes. The last evening, where all the finalists
won trophies, was a farewell dinner at a private
restaurant in The Luxor and then onto Wynns Hotel. The winning
pairs also won 'The Las Vegas Eagle' which they will
keep for a year at their club.
Not only were the competitors playing for prizes but
so were 14 others. Husbands, friends and
sponsors( Campina and Merceica) all trying for a
prize. Bernadette Lee (one of the Campina guests) who came along "just for the fun of it"
won a beautiful glass cactus as the guest prize.
A final quote
from Helen Bailey" A huge thank you from Karen and
myself for a wonderful trip to Vegas. It was so
special and your organisation was superb. We
received such a warm welcome at Pauite and played on
3 terrific courses. I must thank you for all the
hard work that you have done in this competition
right from the first round to make it such a huge
success. "
My final thanks go to our sponsors. Campina,
Merceica Communications and Golf West for their
continued support. Also to our team at WTG who all put
in a lot of effort during the week. Many thanks!!
