MW GOLF TEAM CLASSIC 2006
GRAND FINALS
16th - 22nd July 2006

A 54-hole competition held on the Schwarzsee Golf Club in Kitzbuhel, Austria
with all 3 days scores accumulating into a Total Team score

20 Grand Finalists arrived at the famous 4 star Hotel Rasmushof in Kitzbuhel, Austria having battled their way through their respective leagues, plays offs and National Finals, not to mention the unpredictable British weather.

Beautiful scenery and weather was the order of the day as they drank champagne on the terrace of the wonderful Rasmushof hotel under the shadow of the Hahnenkamm mountains.

On the 1st day of this 54 hole competition, the weather was brilliant. Glorious sunshine. Three Mens Teams and two Ladies teams arrived at the outstanding Schwarzsee Golf Club to play for the crown of the Mens and Ladies MW Golf Team Classic Championships. The front nine of this course is relatively flat and then you go uphill into the stunning Alps. So a good score on the front is imperative. The 1st round leaders were Stewart Mills and his team from Henley and April Whetton and her team from Sapey  After a day off, where some of the players saw the sites of Salzburg, the beautiful mountains surrounding Kitzbuhel and a couple of the ladies paraglided from the top of the Hahnenkamm, round two commenced. Same format of golf, another day and again with stunning scenery and weather. The leaders changed hands in the Mens event with Steve Bootes and his team from Sittingbourne taking over after a cracking score in the Betterball event of 82 points.

Fun was had by all at the hilarious Tyrolean evening with thigh slapping and entertainment in typical Tyrolean style where some of the competitors, especially the lads from Sittingbourne, who were coaxed onto the stage to thigh slap with the Austrians. What a great night was had by all.!

Onto the last day, still fantastic weather but all 4 scores counted so the pressure was on. Sittingbourne and Sapey both held their nerve and became our Champions. During the last day of this competition, we had some fun elements, Best Individual Stableford score, Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin for both the men and the ladies.

Champagne on the terrace started off the evening of the gala dinner on Friday evening. Beautiful food and wine contributed to this great evening of fun and the serious side of the presentation of the awards which were presented by the owner, Signe Kramheller-Reisch and the Overseas director of MW Golf, Mr Karl Hustwick

All competitors were awarded trophies and other memorabilia which were donated by MW Golf,  the Hotel Rasmushof and ourselves but a extra special prize of a 3 day trip with 2 rounds of Golf to Austria or Italy was presented by MW Golf to the highest scoring individual in the Ladies event( Tina Wooldridge -35 points ) and the Mens event( Alan Freke - 37 points ) on the last day when Individual Stableford was played. Steve Bootes  received the Alpine Cup along with April Whetton who received the Tyrol Trophy which they can both display at their club forever.

The golf played was truly outstanding on a challenging course with spectacular views, the friendships gained were remarkable and the spirit and camaraderie was second to none. It was pure delight to host such a well-spirited event with such a friendly atmosphere by all parties concerned.

A final quote from Stewart Mills, the captain of the Henley Golf Club.

On behalf of the Henley Team, I would like to thank you both for a fantastic week in Kitzbuhel. Not only were we blessed with great weather but also our fellow golfers were all great fun and with such superb organization from the leagues through the winter to the Grand Final itself from the both of you, it was a wonderful experience for all of us.

The attention to detail during the whole trip was very impressive with everyone's needs fulfilled with no trouble at all.

This was our first time in the competition and our exploits have certainly raised both our and the MW Golf Team Classic profile within our own and other clubs in our area to the degree that Henley will be entering at least two teams in the next event.

Our final thanks go to our sponsors. MW Golf who have been fantastic to work with and believe, just like us, that professionalism, quality and personal service are the key factors to running any tournament or trip. So much so, that together, we are already in the process of arranging this WINTER'S competition.
